Students Build Car That Delivers 1524 KMPL Mileage

Students of University Laval, Quebec, USA seem to have a flare for building vehicles with incredible fuel economy. Shell's Eco-marathon Americas, a competition which it has been conducted for the last five years, has already been won four consecutive times by students from University Laval, all the time in the prototype gasoline category.

This year's winning team, headed by team manager Philippe Bouchard, had to forfeit last year due to complications developed with their engine. But the team has come back strong this year and has managed to win by developing a prototype vehicle that can, on a liter of petrol, travel 1524 km. That is like travelling from Bangalore to Ahmedabad on a liter of petrol.

"We took our frustrations from last year's event and used them as motivation to return better than ever," said Philippe Bouchard. "We trained our new team members and spent twice as much time fine-tuning the engine and building the car."

If you think that is incredible its no where close to the current record holder. That title is held since 2003 by a French Team that won the European Eco-marathon. Their prototype vehicle delivers an unbelievable mileage of 3333 kmpl.

Understandably, achieving these figures in a regular car is not practically possible. The UrbanConcept category of Eco-marathon Americas, is in that case, closer to reality. Cars that qualify for the category need to have regular car like features such as four wheels, brake pedals, steering wheels, lights et,. The winning concept car in this category managed to deliver a more achievable 370 kmpl
