Sanath Jayasuriya Just Turned 56 - Here's His Birthday Gift To Himself
Sri Lankan cricketing icon and former Member of Parliament Sanath Jayasuriya turned 56 on the 30th of June. And like many other celebrities and former sports stars, Jayasuriya, who terrorised bowlers around the world, celebrated by getting himself a new ride.
However, unlike other sports personalities and celebs, Jayasuriya's new ride wasn't a gas-guzzling supercar or luxury barge. Instead, the Matara Mauler celebrated his 56th birthday by taking delivery of a hybrid SUV, the BYD Sealion 6.
The Sealion 6, which was showcased at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo in January, was the first vehicle from Chinese carmaker Build Your Dream (BYD) to be sold in the island nation of Sri Lanka and is currently offered in two trim levels - Superior and Premium.
The BYD Sealion 6 Superior is the more affordable of the two variant levels and is priced at 21.7 million Sri Lankan Rupees (Rs 61.83 lakh). The Superior trim nets you a hybrid system with a 1.5-litre petrol engine and an 18.3kWh battery pack and a single motor driving the front wheels.

This hybrid setup on the Sealion 6 Superior is limited to 214.5bhp and 300Nm and delivers a claimed maximum range of 1,092km thanks to a 60-litre petrol tank and the aforementioned battery pack.
The top-spec variant of the BYD Sealion 6 in Sri Lanka is the Premium, which is priced at Rs 25.3 million Sri Lankan Rupees (Rs 72.1 lakh). The Sealion 6 Premium upgrades to an all-wheel drive hybrid setup.
This sees the electrical system add another motor on the rear axle and also sees the engine gain a turbocharger. This all-wheel drive dual-motor petrol-electric plug-in hybrid setup delivers a peak output of 319bhp and 550Nm of peak torque, allowing for a 0-100km/h time of just 5.9 seconds.
It is not confirmed which variant of the Sealion 6 that Sanath Jayasuriya had delivered to himself on his 56th birthday. However, the former Sri Lankan player and coach decided to go with the Arctic White colourway instead of the menacing Delan Black and the two shades of Grey on offer - Harbour & Stone.
No matter what version of the BYD Sealion 6, the former Sri Lankan all-rounder chose, he sure picked a spacious one. The Sealion 6 measures 4,775mm long, 1,890mm wide and 1,670mm tall and features a 2,765mm long wheelbase, which makes it similar in size to the Mahindra BE6 and XEV 9e EVs.
The interiors of the Sealion 6 also come packed with the latest in tech, including a 15.6-inch rotating central touchscreen, a 13-inch driver's display, 10-speaker audio system. Other highlights include a crystal gear lever, ventilated front seats, multi-zone climate control and a massive panoramic sunroof.
The new Sealion 6 is not the only well-known car in Jayasuriya's collection. A few years ago, Sanath had taken to Facebook to show off the most famous car in his garage - the Audi A4 he won as man of the tournament for the 1996 World Cup (in which Sri Lanka emerged as winners).
