Ladakhs Leap into Winter Sports with Inaugural Royal Enfield Ice Hockey League
In an unprecedented move to foster the sport of ice hockey in the Indian subcontinent, the Administration of the Union Territory of Ladakh, in conjunction with the Ice Hockey Association of Ladakh, and Royal Enfield – a dominant entity in the mid-size motorcycle segment globally – have unveiled the identities of 15 teams slated to compete in the inaugural Royal Enfield Ice Hockey League in Ladakh.
Scheduled to run from January 3 to January 13, 2024, this groundbreaking event was inaugurated with a grand road show, where Shri Sonam Chosjor, the Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) of Leh, ceremoniously flagged off Royal Enfield motorcyclists. The cavalcade commenced from the NDS Sports complex and concluded at the Leh main market, which pulses with the city's lifeblood.

At this vibrant event, team captains proudly received their official jerseys. The teams, comprised of 10 men and 5 women, symbolize a major stride forward in identifying and cultivating talent from Ladakh's hinterlands. This initiative is particularly significant as it aims to bring structured competition to the civilian populace of this remote region.
Grassroots Development and Talent Scouting
Robust training and selection camps have been established across five of Ladakh's seven zones – including Changthang, Leh, Sham, Drass, and Shakar Chiktan. From these camps, participants for the League were chosen by a committee featuring representatives from the Department of Youth Services & Sports, Ice Hockey Association for Ladakh, Ladakh Women Ice Hockey Foundation, local authorities, and native coaches.
A Vision for Ice Hockey's Future
The Royal Enfield Ice Hockey League is a vital component of a broader strategy to escalate the sport from the grassroots level. This strategy aligns with the objectives outlined in "The Game Changer - Blueprint for the Development of Ice Hockey in Ladakh."
Launched in the presence of Shri Anurag Singh Thakur, Hon'ble Union Minister of Information & Broadcasting and Youth Affairs & Sports, the Blueprint, reviewed by the International Ice Hockey Federation, proposes comprehensive growth of the sport, aiming to assemble an Indian Ice Hockey team for the 2042 Winter Olympics.

Royal Enfield's Role in Elevating Winter Sports
Royal Enfield has taken a proactive role in propelling winter sports, particularly ice hockey, throughout the Himalayan region. In Ladakh, the company has been instrumental in advancing the sport by donating equipment, facilitating a 'train the trainer' program, and ensuring over 500 children receive foundational training in ice skating.
Moreover, Royal Enfield is collaborating with the Ice Hockey Association of India and the Ice Hockey Association of Lahaul to organize training camps and the Royal Enfield Spiti Cup in Himachal Pradesh this winter.

The teams, each with their standout players, are gearing up for an event that promises to be a catalyst for ice hockey's evolution in the nation, as well as a platform for local athletes to shine.
In conclusion, the Royal Enfield Ice Hockey League not only elevates the profile of a niche sport in India but also symbolizes a commitment to developing local talent and creating opportunities for sports enthusiasts.
