Rolls-Royce, TCS Partner On Hydrogen Fuel For Greener Aviation

Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) has broadened its collaboration with Rolls-Royce to further sustainable initiatives. This partnership focuses on hydrogen fuel system technology, aiming to establish hydrogen as a zero-carbon aviation fuel.

At the Farnborough International Airshow, TCS highlighted its technological capabilities in aviation. This expanded partnership builds on a long-standing relationship between Rolls-Royce and the Tata Group, including engines and supply chain commitments. TCS has supported Rolls-Royce since 2010 in design, manufacturing engineering, control systems, software, after-market services, and IT services.

Hydrogen Fuel Research for Aviation

Focus on Sustainable Aviation

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) aims for net zero carbon emissions by 2050. This goal requires innovative sustainability solutions. TCS's commitment to driving sustainable transformation aligns with this broader mission.

Alan Newby, Director of Research and Technology at Rolls-Royce, stated, "We welcome TCS to our hydrogen research programme and their engineering skills will play a valuable role in addressing our technology goals. We've already made great progress and having TCS with us gives us additional capability as we move forward on our journey to enable the energy transition for the aviation sector."

TCS will support Rolls-Royce by providing engineering expertise in system design, component design, supply chain support, and program management. These services will aid Rolls-Royce in addressing key challenges such as fuel combustion, delivery, and integration with an engine.

Engineering Excellence

Regu Ayyaswamy, Senior Vice President and Global Head of Internet of Things and Digital Engineering at TCS, remarked, "TCS and Rolls-Royce have been partners in advancing engineering excellence for nearly a decade. The new partnership for research into hydrogen fuel systems represents a pivotal next step at a time when the aviation industry is faced with the urgent challenge of reducing carbon emissions while maintaining performance and efficiency. It aligns well with TCS' commitment to harness technology for positive societal impact and building a greener future."

Anupam Singhal, President - Manufacturing at TCS, added, "The partnership between TCS and Rolls-Royce is an exciting one that represents a powerful alliance in the quest for sustainable aviation solutions. We are aligned with Rolls-Royce's ambition for a greener future. This partnership is the perfect opportunity to put our technological strengths and passion for the environment to use for advancing innovation and fostering an eco-friendlier aerospace sector."

TCS's Sustainability Goals

TCS has been dedicated to leveraging technology for societal benefits and promoting sustainability across industries. With over 200 sustainability offerings, TCS aids customers worldwide in their sustainability efforts.

As part of the Tata group, TCS is mindful of its environmental impact. In 2021, it set ambitious targets to reduce absolute emissions by 70% across Scope 1 and Scope 2 by 2025 from a 2016 baseline. By FY24, TCS had already reduced its absolute carbon footprint across these scopes by 80%, surpassing its target by 10% ahead of schedule.

This collaboration underscores both companies' commitment to pioneering sustainable technologies in aviation. By combining their expertise, they aim to make significant strides towards achieving net zero carbon emissions.
