The 911 (articulated as 'nine eleven') name is today iconic among auto enthusiasts around the globe. The 911 name signifies and defines the essence of Porsche.

But did you know that the 911 was initially called the 901? The name even debuted at the 1963 Frankfurt Motor Show, and eighty of those 901s were produced before the company received a letter from Peugeot.

Peugeot claimed to have the rights to car names made up of three numbers with a zero in the middle. But Porsche had already ordered some 9s, 0s and 1s to use as badging, all painted in gold, ready to be put on the dashboard and at the back of the car.
Instead of discarding them, Porsche decided to replace the 0 in 901 with a 1. It is reported that the eighty 901s were used for an internal purpose and some did slip out to private owners over the years. Now sit back, relax and watch the video.
