PM Modi Inaugurates Delhi-Meerut RRTS – All You Need To Know About India’s First Rapid Rail Train

PM Modi inaugurated India's first rapid rail train, RapidX at Ghaziabad. This new train will be available for service from October 21.

RapidX promises a faster and more efficient commuting experience. The newest addition to the Indian transit arena will commence services on a 17 km stretch of the Delhi Meerut Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS).

Delhi-Meerut RRTS

Once fully operational, the entire 82.15 kilometre RRTS corridor is expected to drastically reduce travelling time between Delhi and Meerut. In fact, the travel time between these two places is expected to take just under an hour.

The Route Map & Commuting Facilities

The RapidX services will primarily operate on the RRTS corridor between Delhi and Meerut. The foremost section of the route is between Sahibabad and Duhai Depot, covering five stations including Sahibabad, Ghaziabad, Guldhar, Duhai and Duhai Depot.

The RapidX trains are designed with passenger comfort in mind. Every train will have six coaches housing 407 serially numbered seats, in a 2-2 layout. A specific coach is allocated for women, with special provisions for female passengers, differently-abled travellers, and senior citizens.

Apart from seating facilities, each of these new trains can easily accommodate 1,061 standing passengers. Every seat includes an overhead rack for luggage, charging station and free onboard Wi-Fi.

The RRTS Project Development

The RapidX inception is part of a larger project, which aims to develop eight corridors. The first phase includes the 82 km Delhi Ghaziabad Meerut, the 164 km Delhi Gurugram SNB Alwar, and the 103 km Delhi Panipat corridors.

Future enhancements will focus on developing corridors including Delhi Faridabad Ballabgarh Palwal, Ghaziabad Khurja, Delhi Bahadurgarh Rohtak, Ghaziabad Hapur, and Delhi Shahadra Baraut.

What Sets RRTS Apart?

The novelty of the RRTS system stems from its speed and functionality. Compared to metros, the RRTS network is faster and ideal for commuters who engage in long-distance travel across the NCR.

Contrarily, in comparison to railways, the RRTS trains cover shorter distances but at a remarkably higher frequency, and provide superior comfort on par with international commute standards in developed countries.

The operational model of RRTS is reminiscent of the RER in Paris, Regional Express trains in Germany and Austria, and the SEPTA Regional Rail in the United States among others.

In conclusion, the inauguration of the RapidX service aligns with India's ambition of enhancing regional transit facilities. By offering faster, reliable and comfortable travel options, the RRTS will significantly improve the quality of urban commuting.

As India gears up to welcome its first RapidX trains, the future of urban transit seems remarkably optimistic.
