PLI Application Window For Auto Sector Won't Be Reopened - Government Stands Firm
The PLI scheme has garnered significant interest and participation from automotive manufacturers since its inception. The scheme is designed to enhance the competitiveness of Indian manufacturers in the global market, promote domestic manufacturing, and create employment opportunities within the country.
According to recent reports from PTI, it has been stated that the Indian government is not currently considering the option of reopening the application window for automotive companies participating in the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme.

Krishan Pal Gurjar, the Minister of State for Heavy Industries, has stated in a written response to a question in Parliament that the ministry is currently executing two Production Linked Incentive (PLI) schemes.
The main objective of these initiatives is to provide assistance and encouragement to the automobile and auto components sector, along with the advanced chemistry cell (ACC) battery storage industry.
Additionally, the minister clarified that the government does not intend to reopen the application process for companies under the PLI auto scheme. The PLI initiative was introduced by the central government with the primary goal of encouraging domestic manufacturing within the nation.

Given its significance as a significant manufacturing sector, the automobile industry experienced substantial advancement through the implementation of the PLI scheme. This scheme consisted of three distinct sub-schemes.
To support the manufacturing of electric and hydrogen fuel vehicles, the government earmarked Rs 26,000 crore, while an allocation of Rs 18,000 crore was made for the enhancement of advanced chemistry cells that are crucial for the development of storage technologies of EVs.
An amount of ₹10,000 crore was allocated for the Faster Adoption of Manufacturing of Electric Vehicles (FAME) initiative. This scheme played a vital role in boosting the electric vehicle market in the country by providing incentives to stimulate demand and enhance infrastructure development.

Regarding the possibility of reopening the application window for the PLI auto scheme, the minister mentioned that in March 2022, four successful bidders were allocated a total of 50GWh advanced chemistry cell (ACC) manufacturing capacity.
He also conveyed to the Parliament that one of the awarded bidders was disqualified due to breaching the terms and conditions of the bid document, resulting in 20GWh of advanced chemistry cell (ACC) capacity becoming available.
Thoughts On PLI Application Window
Opinions on reopening the PLI application window are likely to vary. Some might argue for its reopening to potentially attract more companies and investments, thus boosting local manufacturing and the economy. Others might advocate maintaining the current approach to ensure fairness and adherence to the existing scheme.
