Pink Line Auto Rickshaws For Women Now In Ranchi
In the light of the apparent increase in crimes against women the Jharkhand Traffic Police department has decided to introduce a dedicated auto rickshaw service for women in Ranchi. The Pink Line fleet of auto rickshaws with pink roofs will be a women only transport service, which will hopefully provide a safer option for women to commute in the city. 200 of these special vehicles are planned to be introduced.
At present the plan is to get female drivers for Pink Line rickshaws, but that depends on availability of women drivers. The next option would be get specially screened male drivers to operate these vehicles, each of whom will be given identity cards.

The Pink Line auto rickshaws will be equipped with GPS and a panic button as additional safety features. In case of an emergency the rickshaws can be easily and quickly traced. Also, authorities are trying to get dedicated parking areas allotted for Pink Line rickshaws.
The idea of women's only public transport service is not a new one. Other states in India have introduced such initiatives before. Pink BMTC buses in the city of Bangalore is one such example.
