The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Transport has recommended that pedestrians and cyclists should not be allowed to use highways and main roads in cities.

The committee was formed to offer suggestions for the changes to be made in the Motor Vehicles Amendment Bill 2016. The report numbered 243 reads, "Pedestrians are the most vulnerable road users and do not have insurance cover. Non-motorized transport users don't follow road rules and create nuisance, and there is a need to streamline them by introducing minor penalty/punishment."

This recommendation by the Parliamentary Standing Committee hasn't gone well with the activists working for the rights of walkers and cyclists.

With the increase in pollution in the country, the authorities should focus on the increase of non-motorised transportation but instead it's the dead opposite of that.

If at all the recommendations are implemented, In India, we don't have dedicated cycle lanes and proper footpaths as an alternative option. So, without having a proper infrastructure, the recommendations serve no purpose.
