Odisha Train Accident Leaves More Than 280 Dead And 900 Injured - Technical Glitch To Blame?

Today, India woke up to the tragic rail disaster where three trains got involved in a horrific crash in Odisha's Balasore, killing hundreds and injuring many others. Coromandel Express, Yesvantpur - Howrah Superfast Express, and a goods train were the trains involved in the crash.

This heart-wrenching incident occurred near the Bahanaga Bazar Railway station in Odisha's Balasore district on Friday at around 07:00pm, and as per the latest news, around 288 people lost their lives, and over 850 were injured.

However, It is still uncertain how the incident happened. It was reported as a head-on collision between the Coromandel Express and a Goods Train, which the Railway officials subsequently denied.

According to passenger accounts, the Coromandel Express got derailed and collided with the goods train parked on the adjacent track. The approaching Yesvantpur Superfast Express struck the trains on the nearby track.

Hundreds of firefighters, police officers, and sniffer dogs are deployed in the location, and a large-scale search and rescue mission is underway. Teams from the National Disaster Response Force are also assisting the operation.

In the primary investigation, Railway officials expressed their suspicion that a fault in the tracks was the cause of the train accident. The loco pilots were unaware of the mishaps as the anti-train collision system 'Kavach' was not installed on this route.

The railway authorities are currently implementing the "Kavach" system throughout their network. This system is designed to provide alerts in case a train driver passes a signal indicating danger, which is one of the major causes of train accidents.

The Kavach system can alert the train driver, take control of the brakes, and automatically bring the train to a stop if it detects another train on the same track within a specified distance.
