This "37-Year-Old" Airplane Just Changed The Course Of Israel-Iran War: What Makes It Special
The United States has entered the Israel-Iran conflict, escalating tensions in the Middle East. The American military targeted three sites in Iran using the Northrop B-2 Spirit stealth bombers. US President Donald Trump announced that these bombers attacked nuclear sites at Fordow, Natanz, and Esfahan.
B2 Bomber: Stealth & Long-Range Capabilities
The B-2 bomber is renowned for its low observability and all-altitude capability. Its design includes radar-absorbent materials and a flying-wing structure, making it difficult to detect by conventional radar systems. This aircraft can travel up to 6,000 nautical miles without refuelling and carries a massive arsenal.

During the mission against Iran, the B-2 flew non-stop for approximately 37 hours from Missouri. It refuelled several times mid-air to maintain its endurance. The bomber's cruising speed of about 900 km/h (560 mph) at high altitudes is optimised for fuel efficiency.
B2 Bomber: Advanced Features
The B-2 Spirit bomber was developed by Northrop Grumman for long-duration strategic missions. It can remain airborne for up to 44 hours on a single mission without engine burnout. This makes it one of the most capable long-range bombers globally.
The aircraft uses four General Electric F118-GE-100 turbofan engines designed for lower temperatures compared to afterburning jet engines. This reduces wear and stress while delivering consistent thrust over long periods.
B2 Bomber: Efficiency & Engine Management
The bomber's aerodynamic shape reduces drag and optimises airflow over engines, contributing to smoother operations. Advanced engine monitoring systems track temperatures and performance, alerting crews to adjust power settings as needed.
In-flight refuelling extends the B-2's endurance further. It can connect with aerial tankers multiple times during missions, replenishing fuel without landing-enabling missions as long as 44 hours nonstop.
Crew Endurance Training
B-2 crews undergo special endurance training to sustain long missions. The cockpit supports extended operations with provisions for sleep rotations, food, and hydration-ensuring both aircraft and pilots complete ultra-long missions safely.
B2 Bomber: Massive Ordnance Penetrator Bombs (MOP Bombs)
The Massive Ordnance Penetrator (MOP) is a large weapon designed to attack deeply buried bunkers. Guided by GPS, it can destroy targets in well-protected facilities. The MOP is more advanced than its predecessors like the BLU-109 and GBU-28.
The B-2 bomber is uniquely capable of carrying the MOP on bombing missions. Each bomber can carry two such bombs. This capability was crucial in targeting Iran's underground uranium enrichment facility at Fordow.
Trump revealed that six Bunker Buster bombs were used on Fordow, while 30 Tomahawk missiles targeted Natanz and Esfahan. The B-2 stealth bomber, a key asset of the US Air Force since 1989, played a crucial role in this operation. Known for its advanced technology, it can evade sophisticated enemy defences.
