NHAI To Implement Self-Healing Asphalt For Enhanced Road Safety: All Details Here
In a significant move towards enhancing road safety and infrastructure, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is set to pioneer a self-healing asphalt technology aimed at addressing the perennial problem of potholes on Indian roads.
This innovative approach could mark a pivotal shift in road maintenance, potentially saving lives by significantly reducing road accidents attributed to poor road conditions.
A senior government official, preferring anonymity, emphasized the need for innovative solutions to increase road durability and mitigate pothole-related issues. "We are considering ingenious and unconventional methods to improve durability and to address the issue of potholes," he stated.
The self-healing asphalt technology, once damaged, has the inherent capability to repair itself, potentially revolutionizing road maintenance by extending the lifespan of roads and minimizing traffic disruptions.
India's struggle with pothole-induced road accidents has seen a worrying uptick, with a 22.6% increase in accidents on national highways in 2022, leading to 4,446 incidents and resulting in 1,856 fatalities, a 25.3% increase from the previous year.
The innovative asphalt consists of a mix of gravel, sand, and bitumen, which wears down over time, causing the surface to erode and form potholes. The introduction of self-healing technology aims to combat this erosion effectively.
The technology involves integrating small pieces of steel wool into the bitumen, making it conductive. When heated with an induction machine, the bitumen can rebind with the stones and gravel in the asphalt, enabling it to heal.
This method not only promises to extend the durability of roads but also offers a cost-effective solution to the government. Before full adoption, a cost-benefit analysis will be conducted to weigh the technology's practicality against its expenses. The official added, "This can increase the lifespan of roads and practically eliminate the need for road maintenance, while bringing down traffic disruption."
Despite the promising prospects of self-healing asphalt, the Road Transport and Highways Ministry has allocated INR 2,600 crore for road maintenance in 2024-25, maintaining the budget from the previous year but slightly higher than the INR 2,573.66 crore spent in 2022-23.
This allocation underscores the government's commitment to improving road safety and infrastructure, with the self-healing technology poised to play a crucial role in achieving these objectives.
