New Emission Norms To Go Live From April 1st – 17 More Cars To Be Confined To History Books
The Indian automobile sector is all geared up to take a giant leap with the implementation of new RDE (Real Driving Emissions), OBD 2, and BS6 Phase 2 emission norms in the country from 1st April 2023.
While both the RDE and OBD 2 fall under the upcoming BS6 Phase 2 emission norms, the former is a collection of sensors and systems that read emissions in real-time, whereas the latter is a type of connector that is required to display the real-time emission data.

Speaking about the upcoming BS6 Phase 2 emission norms, it is very stringent and difficult to be tricked as it involves real-time monitoring of emissions. This makes it a lot more challenging for car manufacturers as the end emission is affected by various parameters including road conditions, altitude, and more.
It is also worth mentioning that these RDE norms are supplemented by the Modified Indian Test Cycle (MIDC). As a result, automotive companies have now invested a lot of money to make their current cars compatible with these latest emission norms.

Moreover, thanks to the implementation of these new emission norms in the country, automakers are now bringing in more electrified technologies. In addition to that, these upcoming regulations have pushed some automakers to kill their diesel engines as it is no longer a viable choice under the upcoming emission regulations.
Speaking about choices, some car manufacturers are trying to save big money by axing models that are not profitable for the company under the new RDE emission norms. As a result, many car makers have already stopped the production of some of the models.

Moreover, it is diesel powertrains that are more difficult to upgrade to the upcoming BS6 Phase 2 emission norms. However, there are a few petrol-powered cars that will also be discontinued from the day of implementing the new emission norms.
Here's the list of cars that will be discontinued.
| Manufacturer | Model Name | |
| 1. | Maruti Suzuki | Alto 800 |
| 2. | Hyundai | Verna (Diesel), i20 (Diesel) |
| 3. | Tata Motors | Altroz (Diesel) |
| 4. | Mahindra | KUV100, Marazzo, Alturas G4 |
| 5. | Toyota | Innova Crysta (Petrol) |
| 6. | Nissan | Kicks |
| 7. | Skoda | Octavia, Superb |
| 8. | Honda | Amaze (Diesel), Jazz, WR-V, 4th Gen City, 5th Gen City (Diesel) |
| 9. | Renault | Kwid 800 |
Thoughts About The RDE, OBD 2, & BS6 Phase 2 Emission Norms In India
The upcoming new emission norms in India will be implemented from 1st April 2023 and we expect a sharp drop in the resale value of old diesel cars in the country. However, on the bright side, these new emission norms will force car manufacturers to develop less polluting powertrains.
