Navi Mumbai International Airport To Take To The Skies On Christmas Day - First Flight From Bengaluru

India's newest airport, the Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA), which was inaugurated by PM Narendra Modi on the 8th of October, will begin commercial operations on December 25. The first scheduled passenger flight arriving at Navi Mumbai (IATA: NMI; ICAO: VANM) will be IndiGo's 6E-460 Bengaluru-Navi Mumbai service, which will land at 8 AM on Christmas Day.

40 minutes after the arrival of Indigo 6E-460 from Bengaluru, Indigo flight 6E-882 to Hyderabad will become the first commercial passenger flight to take off from the Navi Mumbai International Airport

Initial operations at the Navi Mumbai International Airport will run within a restricted twelve-hour window from 8 AM to 8 PM. Airlines will operate a limited schedule of twenty-three daily departures during the opening phase, and NMIA will handle 10 flight movements every hour.

The NMIA will run on this limited schedule for the first month of operations. During this time, the airport in Navi Mumbai will be served by IndiGo, Air India Express, and Akasa Air, which will connect the city to 16 domestic destinations. The limited schedule will be lifted in February when the Navi Mumbai International Airport transitions to round-the-clock operations and 34 departures a day.

Navi Mumbai International Airport - The Highlights

The new Navi Mumbai International Airport spans 1,160 hectares (2,866 acres) for current and future operations. Phase I of NMIA is built for 20 million passengers annually, featuring a single operational runway, a single passenger terminal (handling all arrivals/departures, security, retail, etc.), and essential airside facilities (taxiways, ATC, cargo zones).

The design of the NMIA is modular, allowing for future expansion with more terminals and potentially more runways (the current plan calls for 2 parallel runways) to meet demand beyond the initial capacity.

NMIA's current runway 08/26 measures 3,700 metres long, allowing for operations by both narrow-body and wide-body aircraft (including the double-decker Airbus A380. The runway is supported by a Category II instrument landing system (ILS), allowing aircraft to land even when visibility drops to 300 metres.

The terminal building includes large check-in zones, automated baggage systems and multiple boarding gates configured to reduce congestion. Passenger areas use open layouts, tall glass facades and controlled lighting to maintain clear sightlines and streamline movement between arrival, security and departure sections during busy periods.

Road access to Navi Mumbai International Airport includes Amra Marg on one side and NH-348A on the other, giving the airport direct entry points from both Navi Mumbai and the wider Mumbai Metropolitan region.

The location of NMIA also sits close to the Sion-Panvel Highway, which already carries a large share of intercity traffic, and links smoothly with nodes such as Vashi, Nerul and Kharghar. As additional roads open, including the Ulwe Coastal Road, the airport will gain a quicker connection to the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link, cutting down travel time for passengers coming from South Mumbai.

The airport's connectivity to the surrounding region is steadily improving through the expansion of the local suburban rail network. While existing local train services currently provide near access, direct connectivity is being developed via new metro corridors. Navi Mumbai Metro Line 1 is currently operational, and future metro lines are planned to link up with both the existing Mumbai airport and the new Navi Mumbai facility.

DriveSpark Thinks

With the first flight arriving from Bengaluru on Christmas Day, the Navi Mumbai International Airport will become the second airport for India's financial capital and should help ease the burden on Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, while also providing passengers from South Mumbai with shorter transit times inside the city.
