Mumbai Monorail Makes Maiden Run With Passengers
India's first monorail, the Mumbai Monorail, made its first official run with passengers on saturday. The monorail ran between stations of Chembur and Wadala, covering a distance of 8.8 kilometers.
The monorail left the Wadala station at 1.31 p.m and reached Chembur at 1.47 p.m. The return journey started at 1.57 p.m and the first historical run was complete by 2.16 p.m.

This was still a test run though and full fledged operations will begin once the Safety Certification process is completed and a Safety Certification Engineer is appointed. Operations are expected to begin on a regular basis August onwards. This will further be extended to nearly 20 km, with the addition of Jacob Circle.
The project is being undertaken by the MMRDA along with engineering & construction firms Larsen & Toubro and Malaysia's Scomi Engineering. The project began in 2009 and is estimated to be completed by the year 2031. The final length of Mumbai Monorail line will be 135 km.
At full speed the monorail can achieve speeds of up to 80 kmph. One unique experience of travelling in a monorail is the lean it achieves when taking tight turns.
