Mumbai Metro Begins Service After Long Delay
Mumbai now finally has a third mode of rail based public transportation service to reduce the burden on the stressed suburban railway system. The Mumbai metro service began operating on Sunday. Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan took the inaugural ride.
Eight years after work commenced, the Mumbai metro finally made its first run after a three year delay. The metro service comes only four months after the monorail service became operational.
Interestingly, the metro service was reportedly began after a local BJP MP threatened to start the service by force on Saturday.

The inaugural run took place on the 11.4 km Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar stretch. Trains will be available every four minutes and they will operate 200-250 services on a daily basis.
Each metro coach can carry 375 passengers and a train can transport 1,500 commuters. The service is estimated to ferry around 11 lakh passengers each day. A one way ride will cost from Rs 10 to a maximum of Rs 40.
