Mumbai Joins Delhi: E85 Petrol Now Available At Rs 91 Per Litre

High-blend E85 petrol is now available in Mumbai at a price of Rs 91.18 per litre. This 85 per cent ethanol-blended fuel has been introduced specifically for flex-fuel-compatible vehicles and marks another major step in India's alternative fuel push.

E85 Flex Fuel Introduced in Mumbai

India is actively pushing for higher ethanol blending and wider adoption of flex-fuel vehicles. To improve the availability of E85 fuel across India, the government is planning to expand supply in key cities. New Delhi became the first Indian city to offer E85 petrol at Rs 82.12 per litre, and now Mumbai has joined the list at Rs 91.18 per litre.

Recently, brands like Maruti Suzuki and Hero MotoCorp have introduced production-ready flex-fuel vehicles. Union Minister Nitin Gadkari had also confirmed the approval of E85 fuel for transportation use, and more brands are expected to join this shift soon.

Automakers like Mahindra & Mahindra, Hyundai, and MG Motor are also expected to introduce flex-fuel-compatible vehicles in the coming months. These vehicles are specially designed to operate on E85 fuel, which contains a much higher ethanol content than standard E20 petrol.

What Makes Flex-Fuel Vehicles Different?

Flex-fuel vehicles use modified engine components such as fuel injectors, fuel filters, delivery systems, and pumps that are specially designed to resist corrosion caused by higher ethanol content.

E85 Is Cheaper Than Regular Petrol

Regular E20 petrol in Mumbai currently costs around Rs 111.33 per litre, making E85 nearly Rs 20 more affordable per litre. This price difference makes flex-fuel vehicles an attractive option, especially at a time when global crude oil prices continue to fluctuate.

In the two-wheeler segment, Hero MotoCorp already sells flex-fuel versions of popular commuter bikes like the Hero Splendor Plus and Hero HF Deluxe. In the four-wheeler segment, Maruti Suzuki currently offers the flex-fuel Maruti Suzuki WagonR for commercial use. Both brands are expected to expand their flex-fuel lineup in the future.

These flex-fuel vehicles can operate on fuel blends ranging from E20 to E100, making them highly adaptable for future fuel transitions. However, consumers are advised to understand fuel availability, maintenance costs, and long-term practicality before purchasing a flex-fuel vehicle.
