Tense Moment At Mumbai Airport: Two Planes Nearly Collide on Runway

A tense situation unfolded at Mumbai airport last Saturday, resembling a scene from a Hollywood action film. Two planes attempted to land and take off from the same runway simultaneously. This incident, captured on video, has since gone viral on social media. The event raises questions about how it occurred and its potential dangers.

Flying has become a routine part of modern life, thanks to advancements in technology. Airplanes are now essential for many people, prompting airlines and air traffic control organisations to implement stringent safety measures.

Air Traffic Control (ATC) is responsible for providing crucial information such as flight routes and speeds. Each country and airport has its own ATC to manage these operations.

At Mumbai airport, two runways, 27 and 14, are currently operational. These runways handle 850 aircraft movements daily, with Runway No. 27 alone managing 46 aircraft per hour. Last Saturday, a significant incident occurred on this runway involving an Air India aircraft and an IndiGo aircraft.

Near Miss Incident at Mumbai Airport

On the day of the incident, IndiGo flight 6E 6053 was approaching Mumbai airport when ATC granted permission to land. According to standard runway rules, once an aircraft is cleared to land, no other aircraft should take off from that runway until the landing plane has fully landed and vacated the taxiway.

However, in this case, permission was granted for another aircraft to take off before the first plane had landed. The incident was recorded on camera from the runway. The IndiGo aircraft was just 1200 feet away when the other plane began its takeoff roll.

Fortunately, the departing aircraft took off just in time, averting a major accident by a mere 45 seconds. Had either plane been delayed by 45 seconds, over 500 lives could have been at risk.

The video of this close call has gone viral on social media. Following the incident, an investigation is underway involving Mumbai ATC officials.

Employees at Mumbai ATC have been ordered to work in shifts as part of the ongoing inquiry into how both planes were granted permission simultaneously.

DriveSpark Thinks

While ATC generally operates systematically, this incident suggests a possible technical glitch or human error. The aviation authority must identify the cause and take necessary actions to prevent future occurrences. Ensuring such mistakes do not recur is crucial to avoiding potential accidents.
