The G63 AMG Cabriolet By Refined Marques Is The G-Wagen Mercedes Didn't Do
German customizers, Refined Marques have gone and done what the bosses at Mercedes-AMG have refused to do to date, make a cabriolet version of the G63 AMG. This exclusive custom SUV is limited to just 20 units worldwide and is priced at $1.3 million.
Refined Marques took inspiration from the 2013 G500 Final Edition to create the AMG-ified custom G-Class Cabriolet. But unlike that previous-gen G-Class cabriolet, this one does have a few tricks up its sleeve that make the custom SUV so much better.
One of the biggest differences is the powerful 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 engine from AMG that rests under that boxy bonnet. The AMG engine pushes out 577bhp at 6,00rpm and 850Nm of peak torque which is sent to all four wheels via a nine-speed automatic gearbox.
Another highlight of the Mercedes-AMG G63 Cabriolet by Refined Marques is the suicide rear doors fitted to the SUV. Not only do they look cool, despite being quite tiny in size, but they also help with ingress and egress for those using the rear bench seat.
Another area where Refined Marques went beyond the call of duty is the roof, which was a bugbear for owners of the 2013 G500 Final Edition cabriolet. For the 20 owners of the custom AMG G-Wagen cabriolet, the process is a lot simpler. To open the roof, one has to press the brake pedal, which opens the latches and then press a button that sends it into its stowage area.
According to the customizers, the idea for the G63 Cabriolet came from the son of CEO Ahmed Al Bakry. In an Instagram post, Al Bakry states that the idea came from his then 5-year-old son asking him if he could make a version of the Brabus G700 they were driving around in with a soft-top roof and a small door for him to get in and out of.
Intrigued, he proceeded to do just that and built a one-off that brought his son's idea to life. However, after the project gained significant interest from many G-Class connoisseurs including many from the Middle East, the customizers decided to make 20 units based on the G63.
The limited-edition G63 Cabriolet has already generated substantial interest, with most units being sold before production.
