Mantis: World's Largest Six Legged Walking Robot
Mantis is an all terrain conquering six legged walking robot built by animatronics specialist Micromagic Systems. The company took four years to build the hexapod walking robot and claims it is the largest of its kind in the world.
This giant metal creepy crawly weights 1,900 kg (4,188 lbs) and measures 2.8 meters (9.18 ft) tall and is capable of walking with a driver in its belly. Powering this fun machine is a Perkins 2.2 liter turbo diesel engine that puts all the hydraulics in motion, which in turn control the six legs. Understandably, the machine is outfitted with a variety of sensors that maintain its balance, orientation, aid in locomotion and so on. All the electronics and the 18 hydraulic actuators distributed among the six legs are controlled and monitored by a Linux operating PC running HexEngine software. Top speed is a just 1 km/h (0.62 mph), but with the kind of fun one can have sitting inside, the lack of speed is not a concern. Read more after the gallery below.

Micromagic Systems is not new to the world of animatronics as mentioned in the beginning. In fact, the team even built a hexapod robot for one of the Harry Potter movies that appeared as a giant six legged magical creature in the story.
Mantis hexapod walking machine on the other hand, is a passion project. But its creators do rent it out for events and shows, which helps generate funds with which the machine can be developed and improved further.
Walking mechanical robots are not new and can be put to practical use in the real world. With proper funding and a dedicated development team, which already exists the Mantis could very well become a successful and famous metal monster.
