Loopwheel: The Next Generation Bicycle Wheels
Ever asked yourself, how it would be to ride a bicycle with a full suspension system built into a compact wheel ~ Sounds bizarre right?
UK designer, Sam Pearce has revealed the Loopwheel, a wheel hub with three folded leaf springs instead of spokes. The whole idea behind this setup, was to provide the cyclist enthusiast with a less jarring ride. The obvious question that float's in one's mind, when looking at the below image is the safety?
Let's not forget, prototype wheel suspensions are nearly as old as the bicycle itself. But, Sam Pearce and his team is confident that their invention will soon hit production ~ Drivespark takes a closer look at the Loopwheel. The Idea behind the Loopwheel is an interesting story. It is said that, Pearce got the idea from Children strollers, and... what would that be? Click through the photos to learn more.

The Loopwheel was basically invented from an idea Sam Pearce ~ The Inventor ~ got while waiting for a flight.
You know Children strollers right? But what happens when parents pushing the strollers hit a gap in the floor ~ Most of the times the stroller jolt's and pushes the child forward. Looking at this situation an idea cropped up about wheel shock absorbers...

And... the outcome was a traditional wheel hub with three folded leaf springs instead of spokes.
Such a setup keeps the rim rigid, but allows the hub to travel more than 1.75 inches, which in-turn helps to absorb shocks from uneven surfaces.

The Inventor ~ Sam Pearce ~ has plans to design the Loopwheel for bikes of all sizes. For the moment, he has developed only a 20-inch wheel which is suitable for a folding commuter bike. If this invention didn't interest you much - Click
