The flying cars are said to be the future of transport. But most of the models have been considered as a fantasy. But German firm Lilium Jet has just turned the fantasy into reality.
Lilium Jet has completed the series of test flights of its prototype electric flying car. The prototype is a two-seater vehicle with an electric powertrain, and 36 electric engines mounted on the wings via 12 moveable flaps.

The flaps of the prototype point downwards during the takeoff. The flaps gradually tilt into horizontal position propel the vehicle forward. When the flaps are horizontal, they operate as a conventional aeroplane.

The flexible flap setup allows the Lilium Jet to take off vertically like a helicopter, but at the same time, it can travel as fast as an aeroplane. The prototype can reach speeds up to 300km/h and has a range of over 300km.

The company claims that the jet is capable of travelling five times faster than a car. But the power consumption is identical to an electric vehicle. A fail-safe technology is also equipped to land the jet safely in case of a battery failure.

Lilium Jet aims to build a five-seater variant of the prototype that can be used in urban environments. The company also aims at setting up an on-demand air transportation service. The customers can book a flight through the smartphone app.
