Sustainable Travel Revolution: Ladakh's Electric Buses Hit 10 Lakh Km Milestone!
Championing the cause of environmental sustainability, Ladakh has emerged as a beacon of green transportation with its fleet of electric buses that have been serving the region for over a year. These eco-friendly vehicles were introduced with the dual objective of reducing carbon emissions and bolstering public transport.
They have collectively traversed over 10 lakh kilometers, ferrying an average of 1,500 passengers each day, thereby preventing more than 25 lakh kilos of carbon emissions from polluting the atmosphere over the past 12 months.

The deployment of these 19 state-of-the-art electric buses has been particularly impactful in Ladakh, a zone of acute environmental sensitivity where conventional public transport options are rather limited. Manufactured by PMI Electro Mobility Solutions, a pioneer in the electric vehicle (EV) industry, these buses serve as a testament to the region's commitment to ecological conservation.
Revolutionizing Transport in Ladakh's Challenging Terrain
The PMI Foton electric buses, managed by the local transport department, have become a lifeline for residents and tourists travelling between Leh and Kargil—two critical hubs in the Union Territory. These buses have been engineered to withstand the extreme cold and clocked up to 10.50 lakh kilometres in these demanding conditions.
Designed with a 180 km range on a single charge and equipped with rapid charging capabilities allowing for a full recharge in about an hour, these buses are both efficient and resilient. With a robust fleet of over 1,200 buses plying in 27 cities across India, PMI Electro Mobility Solutions is at the forefront of the country's transition to eco-friendly mass transit.
Aanchal Jain, PMI's CEO, expressed pride in the company's role in supporting Ladakh's sustainable journey, highlighting the synergy with India's "Net Zero" ambitions and the importance of preserving the region's natural splendours.
Technological Excellence for Passenger Comfort and Safety
Ensuring a comfortable and secure travel experience, the PMI electric buses in Ladakh come equipped with advanced features, including climate control systems to handle the cold climate, 360-degree cameras, Advanced Driver Assistant System (ADAS), AI-based monitoring, and enhanced rear-view cameras.
Moreover, these technologically advanced buses are fitted with Intelligent Transportation Management Systems, providing access to Google Maps for real-time navigation, automated passenger counting, and other innovative functions.
They feature a powerful 204 KwH Advanced Lithium-ion battery pack and smart systems that track schedules, monitor remaining charges, and manage routes efficiently. With a capacity for 30 passengers, these buses represent a significant investment, each valued at over ₹1.20 crore.
Notably, the PMI Foton electric buses have gained recognition for their operational efficiency beyond Ladakh, serving at major airports like Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport and in public transportation networks of cities including Surat, Shimla, and Dharamshala.
In conclusion, the successful application of electric buses in Ladakh exemplifies India's determination to embrace clean technology in public transportation. It showcases a scalable model of sustainable development that harmonizes with the delicate ecological balance of the Himalayan region.
The progress made in Ladakh is a promising sign for the future of electric mobility in India, emphasizing the country's potential to lead the way in combating climate change and achieving its "Net Zero" goals.
