Kerala's AI Traffic Monitoring System Misreads Bike Speed, Records 1240km/h - Faulty Tech?
Kerala was recently in the news for implementing the AI camera system across the state to detect traffic rule violations and issue challans. The motor vehicle department has installed over 726 AI cameras across the state. The system is designed to automatically detect violations and issue challans based on it.
The AI camera system was implemented after a long trial run to ensure accuracy. On the first day, the cameras issued over 38,000 challans, and the state was applauded for its effort in taking such advanced measures to reduce traffic rule violations.

However, a recent incident has drowned the system's reputation in the drain. The AI camera detected a biker riding at 1240 km/h, which was impossible. It was reported that the authorities have already rectified the issue and taken action to prevent such errors in the future.
According to a video report shared on YouTube by a local news channel, the AI camera mistakenly recorded the motorcycle's speed. The AI camera captured a photo and sent it to the control room, where the system issued a challan for a whopping speed of 1240 km/h.
At first, it was stated that the biker had been fined for not wearing a helmet, and the system might have gotten confused and issued a challan for overspeeding. Later, after a thorough investigation, it was found that the biker had not violated any rules.
Since the introduction of these cameras, several instances of errors have been reported. The video report also explains how the AI camera gets confused when it sees a screw or a bolt on a number plate. It mistakenly reads the screw as the number zero and issues a fine.
Initially, the project was announced as a system that would not require any human intervention. Still, due to the errors and issues reported in the last couple of days, Motor Vehicle Inspectors and AMVIs have now been assigned to control rooms to review the pictures taken by the AI camera.
The whole idea of the AI camera system was to fully automate the after procedures of traffic rule violations without any human intervention. However, in light of the recent errors, Motor Vehicle Inspectors and AMVIs have been assigned to control rooms to manually review the pictures the AI camera captured.
Still, most people in Kerala are against the AI system and have raised complaints, as they feel it is partial towards politicians and other VIPs who drive recklessly on the narrow roads of Kerala.
In addition to capturing violations of overspeeding, the AI camera system can also detect and issue challans for various other traffic violations such as using a mobile phone while driving, driving a car without wearing a seatbelt, illegal parking, and running a red light, among other offenses.
Thoughts On Kerala's AI Camera System
No matter what, these systems are deployed for the safety of both pedestrians and motorists. It can be quite difficult for people to get used to these latest technologies, but we must put extra effort into dealing with them.
After all, traffic rules are something that we have to follow strictly. These rules are designed for the safety of the people, and as law-abiding citizens, we must follow them.
