Karnataka Govt Raises Tax On Petrol And Diesel, Prices Climb
The Karnataka government has increased the tax rate on petrol and diesel, pushing fuel prices higher. The retail sales tax on petrol has moved from 25.92% to 29.84%. Diesel tax has risen from 14.34% to 18.44%. This tax hike has led to a Rs. 3 increase in petrol prices and a Rs 3.50 increase in diesel prices.
Opposition's Reaction
The opposition BJP has announced a statewide protest against this price hike. They argue that this increase will burden the common man. On the other hand, the government defends the hike, stating that Karnataka's fuel taxes are still lower than many other South Indian states.

Government's Justification
The government claims that this tax increase is necessary to compensate for the revenue shortfall caused by guarantee schemes. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah criticises the Central Government, accusing it of diverting Karnataka’s resources to other states and misleading the people of Karnataka.
Revenue Generation
The state government expects to generate approximately Rs 2,000 crore this fiscal year from this fuel price increase. This revenue is crucial for implementing various welfare schemes and developmental projects.
Price Comparison
With the new hike, petrol in Bengaluru now costs Rs 102.84 per litre, and diesel is priced at Rs 88.95 per litre. In comparison, Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala has the highest petrol price at Rs 107.56, while Hyderabad in Telangana has the highest diesel price at Rs 95.65.
Current Prices
| City | Petrol Price (Rs/Litre) | Diesel Price (Rs/Litre) |
|---|---|---|
| Bengaluru | 102.84 | 88.95 |
| Thiruvananthapuram | 107.56 | 93.65 |
| Hyderabad | 106.30 | 95.65 |
The revised rates highlight that, despite the increase, Karnataka's fuel prices are still competitive compared to neighbouring states. The government's decision aims to balance revenue generation while maintaining relatively lower fuel costs for consumers. The move is expected to bring relief to consumers and industries in Karnataka, as it could help stabilize transportation and production costs.

DriveSpark Thinks
This decision reflects the state government's commitment to supporting economic growth while ensuring that the burden on the public is not excessive.
By keeping fuel prices relatively lower than in neighboring states, Karnataka aims to remain an attractive destination for investment and business activities, ultimately contributing to the overall development of the state's economy.
