Students of KJ Somaiya Engineering College, Mumbai have developed a prototype car that has an estimated mileage of 300 kmpl. Jugaad, as the car is called, will take part in the fourth annual Shell eco Marathon Car Race in Kuala Lumpur in July.

The car marathon will be held in at the Sepang International Formula 1 circuit, where Jugaad will compete against similar cars, not just from other countries but a few other cars from India as well.

Jugaad is made completely from fiberglass and comes in at 60 kg. The three wheeled vehicle employs a fuel injection engine which the students have estimated, delivers a fuel economy of 300kmpl after running it for 10 km every day, over a period of 20 days, on 250 ml of petrol.

At the Marathon Car Race they will be required to cover 11.2 km with 250 ml fuel onboard. The vehicle that goes the furthest wins.

The student team have spent INR 4 lakhs on the project, with INR 1.5 lakhs coming in as funding from Yamaha and Om Freight. The students estimate in a real world scenario Jugaad will return 70-80 kmpl, with the inclusion of a suspension, a proper body and other features that will make it road legal.
