JSW MG Motor India Unveils India's First High-Voltage Second-Life Battery At The Battery Show 2024

At the The Battery Show, held at the India Expo Mart in Greater Noida from October 3-5, 2024, JSW MG Motor India unveiled an innovative venture in the field of electric vehicle (EV) technology.

In partnership with Vision Mechatronics, the company introduced India's first high-voltage (HV) second-life battery equipped with a domestically developed Battery Management System (BMS), as a part of their 'Project Revive’.

JSW MG Motor India Unveils Project Revive

This initiative underscores the brand's commitment to advancing sustainable EV solutions and strengthens its efforts in pushing the boundaries of EV battery utilization beyond their initial lifecycle.

The collaboration with Vision Mechatronics marks a significant milestone in repurposing used EV batteries for industrial applications, showcasing a shared dedication to reducing carbon footprints through innovative technology.

"Vision Mechatronics is proud to introduce ReLive, in partnership with JSW MG Motor India. Our partnership resonates shared values of minimizing carbon footprints by deploying innovative solutions. ReLive is India's first high-voltage repurposed battery, equipped with an indigenous, homegrown active balancing BMS," said Dr. Rashi Gupta, Managing Director of Vision Mechatronics.

Talking about safety, Dr. Gupta said, "This innovative solution adheres to the highest safety standards, making it a reliable and sustainable choice for industrial energy storage. By repurposing EV batteries, ReLive contributes to a circular economy and offers a cost-effective alternative to traditional energy storage options. We are excited to collaborate with industry partners to drive the adoption of this technology and contribute to a more sustainable future."

Efforts Towards Sustainable Mobility

The 'Project Revive' initiative is not the first endeavor by JSW MG Motor India to promote sustainability within the EV domain. The company has previously launched several projects under the same banner, including partnerships with BATX and IIT Delhi to develop a fully off-grid charging station by February 2024, and collaborations with Lohum and TERI for deploying a 5kWh BESS unit to power a school in Nainital in August 2024.

These projects are part of JSW MG Motor India's broader strategy to minimize environmental impacts and contribute to the energy transformation in India through innovative and sustainable mobility solutions.

Vision Mechatronics

This project with Vision Mechatronics represents the third pilot project aimed at exploring second-life battery applications, demonstrating a proactive approach in fostering a circular economy and enhancing the sustainability of the EV ecosystem.

The initiative focuses on repurposing EV batteries as a UPS backup solution for an industrial facility in Pune, thereby illustrating the practicality and efficiency of second-life batteries for large-scale energy storage.

Advancing Battery Technology

The development of the high-voltage second-life battery with an indigenous BMS is a testament to the technological advancements in the field. Vision Mechatronics has played a vital role by offering its expertise in second-life batteries, ensuring the product's suitability for various stationary applications in industrial settings.

The battery system incorporates an advanced monitoring system for optimal performance and early detection of potential issues, adhering to high safety standards to mitigate risks such as thermal runaway.

Gaurav Gupta, Chief Growth Officer at JSW MG Motor India, expressed his enthusiasm for the venture, stating, "Our partnership with Vision Mechatronics is a testament of bringing circularity in the EV batteries, by providing it a second life for large-scale industrial application."

"The launch of this project, India's first high-voltage second-life battery with an indigenous BMS, is indeed an innovation and makes us future ready. We are a responsible OEM with innovative values and this project highlights our continued work to drive momentum in building a sustainable EV ecosystem. This is our third project in the space of providing a second life to EV batteries. The successful initiatives under 'Project Revive' are paving the way for a greener and more sustainable future," said Mr. Gupta.

JSW MG Motor India's project, in collaboration with Vision Mechatronics, not only highlights the brand's dedication to innovation in EV technology but also its commitment to promoting sustainable practices within the automotive industry.

Through initiatives like 'Project Revive’, the company is setting a benchmark for how the industry can move towards a greener future by repurposing EV batteries and minimizing environmental impact.
