Let's Get Sideways: JK Tyre Launches India’s First-Ever Drift Challenge!
JK Tyre, a prominent figure in the promotion of motorsport in India, is set to raise the adrenaline thrill of Indian motorsport fans with the launch of the country's first-ever drifting competition - the JK Tyre Drift Challenge. Slated for October 16 at the Buddh International Circuit (BIC), this novel event is poised to disrupt the Indian motor-racing landscape by introducing a rapidly emerging motorsport discipline that has captivated a global audience.
Drifting is a unique motorsport discipline that values finesse, precision and handling more than raw speed. The crux lies in the drivers skilfully sliding their cars and manipulating oversteer to abruptly manoeuvre through corners.

The act of vehicles teetering on their limits, executing sideways movements around corners, amid screeching tyres and billowing clouds of smoke, provides a gripping spectacle that has been instrumental in the soaring popularity of Drifting. The sport especially resonates with young audiences and is one of the fastest-growing branches of motorsport globally.
Sanjay Sharma, Head-Motorsport, JK Tyre, has underscored the significance of the JK Tyre Drift Challenge in Indian motorsport history. Sharma pointed out that though drifting had been happening in India for some time, it remained scattered and rather disorganized. With this event, India’s first organized drifting competition, they intend to set official standards for drifting in India that can soon match global ones. The competition will serve as a platform for the country's gifted drivers to showcase their prowess and satiate motorsport enthusiasts craving a fresh experience.
The JK Tyre Drift Challenge will feature a line-up of 25 formidable rear-wheel drive cars driven by some of the finest drivers in the country. The contest will span across series of events on specialized track layouts that push the drivers and their vehicles to their very limits.
The assessment will be made by a panel of three international drifting experts, Alistair Woodham from India who was a former member of Drift Commission of FIA, Cristiani Nanami Lazaro from Brazil and Tanakorn Lertyaovarit from Thailand. The rating criteria hinge on four fundamental aspects: line, angle, style, and speed.

Aside from the Drift Challenge, the BIC will also host the JK Tyre Formula Imperial and the Indian Karting Race. Organized by the Imperial Society of Innovation Engineers (ISIEINDIA) and supported by JK Tyre, this competition offers an opportunity for Indian engineering students to create and develop sustainable mobility solutions.
A crowd of over 2,000 students from across the country is expected to participate, with projects emphasising innovations in vehicle aerodynamics, battery and powertrain design, braking, and suspension technologies. These projects will be evaluated in multiple rounds between October 12 and 16, culminating in a 12-lap endurance finale at the BIC to decide the winners.
All in all, the JK Tyre Drift Challenge promises to be a historic moment in the narrative of Indian motorsports, opening new avenues and possibilities for both participants and spectators alike. It stands as a laudable attempt to elevate the country's motorsport scene to international standards and serves as a stepping stone towards the growth of India's motorsport landscape.
