Jilumol Thomas: A Triumph Over Disability - Securing A Drivers License
For some, obtaining a driver's license is a straightforward process that happens almost as soon as they apply. However, for Jilumol Thomas, a young woman from Kerala, the journey has been nothing short of extraordinary.
Hailing from the Idukki district, Jilumol was born without arms, yet she has steadfastly refused to let this define her limitations. Her determination culminated in triumph as she was officially granted a driver's license after an arduous five-year battle.

Unlike the usual process, Jilumol's license came as a result of meticulous testing and examination by the Regional Transport Office (RTO). For individuals with disabilities in India, procuring a driver's license is rarely an easy feat.
Yet, Jilumol's unwavering resolve caught the attention of Kerala's Chief Minister, Pinarayi Vijayan, who personally facilitated the issuance of her license — A testament to her outstanding dream and perseverance.

Armed with her new license, Jilumol can now legally operate a vehicle, skillfully using her feet to control the car. Her remarkable story doesn't end there; she's also a talented graphic designer and an accomplished artist.
The dream of driving officially stoked a fire in Jilumol, prompting her to submit her application to the Kerala Motor Vehicles Department (MVD) for a driving license.
Initially, Jilumol's application faced rejections, but she didn't falter. For five consecutive years, she persistently sought her right to drive. Her plight eventually reached the State Commission for Persons with Disabilities, which took up her cause and urged the state transport commissioner to intervene.
This prompted an investigation by the MVD officials in Ernakulam district, tasked with devising a solution for Jilumol's unique needs. The officials recommended a custom-designed vehicle that Jilumol could control using her legs.
However, the challenge lay in finding a manufacturer who would undertake such a modification. After a year of searching, a Kochi-based company stepped forward to modify a 2018 Maruti Suzuki Celerio specifically for her.
The car's main controls were adapted for foot operation, and certain functions were integrated with voice command technology. The Kerala MVD rigorously scrutinized these adjustments, and following a successful trial run with Jilumol at the wheel, the authorities were satisfied and approved her license.
DriveSpark, an automotive commentary platform, recognizes Jilumol's achievement as not just a personal victory but a milestone for governmental action. Jilumol herself views it as an acknowledgement of her five-year campaign.
Her struggle stands to inspire change, promising a future where differently-abled individuals may navigate the licensing process with greater ease. Jilumol Thomas's incredible journey is a beacon of hope and resilience for many.
Having mastered the art of driving against all odds, she paves the way for inclusive development in India's transport sector. Jilumol's story is not just about acquiring a driver's license; it's about redefining what's possible and driving change for a more accommodating world.
