Indian Prodigy's Leap to Formula E: Jehan Daruvala Bets Big with Maserati
Jehan Daruvala, an Indian motor racing driver, has recently made a giant leap in his career with his move to Formula E, making him only the third Indian to drive in an official FIA world championship. Having spent four years in Formula 2, Daruvala's transition to Formula E comes as a significant advancement in his motorsport career. The young racing prodigy will be driving for Maserati MSG Racing alongside Max Guenther. He steps into the position after replacing Edoardo Mortara.
Previously with Mahindra Racing in a reserve role, many suspected Daruvala's next move would be to secure a 2024 seat with the Indian motorsport team. However, according to the 24-year-old, aligning with Maserati was his top choice. This decision seemed well-founded, as Mahindra Racing struggled with their new Gen3 car and had a lackluster performance this year, finishing 10th among 11 teams.

Although Maserati also faced initial hardships, the team dramatically improved performance towards the latter half of the season, culminating in its first Formula E triumph at the Jakarta E Prix. This success marked Maserati's debut single-seater world championship win since Juan Manuel Fangio's F1 German GP victory in 1957.
Daruvala's selection at Maserati was significantly influenced by his experience driving the current Gen3 Formula E cars, an expertise he picked up during two testing appearances with Mahindra. His performance caught the eye of James Rossiter, Team Principal at Maserati MSG Racing, who said, "He definitely caught my attention…He ended up seventh overall in that rookie test and that was a very clear indication to me that he has the right skill set to succeed in Formula E."

Despite a challenging season in F2, Rossiter believes that we must not underestimate the difficulty of winning a race in F2, and it is more about bringing the best out of Jehan so he can achieve notable results.
Transitioning from Formula 2 to Formula E presents a unique challenge to Daruvala. The nature of Formula E requires mastering a different racing craft compared to other single-seater series. When asked about the anticipated difficulty level, Daruvala acknowledged the forthcoming struggle, but also expressed his enthusiasm and focus on adaptation.
The Indian racer is now based in Monaco, where he is honing his skills using a simulator ahead of the upcoming season. Although he refused to predict specific results for the upcoming season, Daruvala's general aim is to consistently fight for points and be on the sharp end of the grid.
With Daruvala's entry, India's visibility in global motorsport is set to rise. Although India hosted its first Formula E round with the Hyderabad E Prix, it seems unlikely to persist in the calendar next year. Nevertheless, Daruvala remains optimistic that his participation in Formula E will elevate the sport's profile in India.
