ISRO Targets Mars Landing With Mangalyaan-2 Mission

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is setting its sights on Mars once again with plans for the Mangalyaan-2 mission. Following the success of its predecessor, Mangalyaan, ISRO aims to join the ranks of the US and China by successfully landing a spacecraft on Mars.

A presentation on National Technology Day unveiled some fascinating details about this mission, showing ISRO's innovative approach to Mars exploration.

Landing Gear Designed for Mars

One of the standout features of Mangalyaan-2 is the sky-crane landing system. Inspired by NASA's Perseverance rover, this technology promises a precise landing on Mars' challenging terrain.

This method allows the rover to be lowered gently onto the Martian surface, ensuring it lands upright and is ready for its mission. ISRO's engineers are currently tailoring this system for their rover, indicating significant progress in their capabilities.

Exploring with a Martian Helicopter

ISRO's ambitions extend beyond rovers. They are developing a helicopter, dubbed the "Martian Boundary Layer Explorer" or "MARBLE," to navigate the thin Martian atmosphere.

This rotorcraft, still in the design phase, aims to soar up to 100 metres high to study Mars' atmosphere. This addition could offer unique insights into Martian weather patterns and atmospheric conditions.

Ensuring Constant Communication

A key component of the mission is the relay communication satellite. Launched via the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle, this satellite will facilitate communication between the Mars mission and Earth. Given the variable communication delays between the two planets, which range from 3 to 44 minutes depending on their orbital positions, this satellite is crucial for maintaining a steady flow of information.
