Government Plans 15% Isobutanol Blend In Diesel: Here's What It Means

After introducing ethanol blending in petrol, the Indian government is now planning to blend up to 15% isobutanol with diesel from 2027. Since ethanol cannot be blended directly with diesel, isobutanol is now being explored as a potential alternative.

Isobutanol To Blend with Diesel - Nitin Gadkari

Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, has revealed that the government plans to begin blending isobutanol with diesel starting next year. Isobutanol has a higher energy density and lower emissions and is currently being tested by several OEMs. Tata Motors, one of the largest commercial vehicle manufacturers in India, has also announced that it will assist the government in blending isobutanol with diesel.

According to several media reports, Nitin Gadkari said, "Ethanol can't be blended directly with diesel, so we're producing isobutanol from ethanol. Isobutanol can serve as an alternative to diesel. Blending of diesel has been looked into with great seriousness. Research is underway, and the results are very encouraging."

Why Diesel Blend?

India is one of the world's largest importers of crude oil, making its economy vulnerable to price fluctuations and geopolitical uncertainties. Isobutanol has a higher energy density than ethanol and is also less water absorbent, making it more suitable for use in vehicles powered by diesel fuel.

It is also a plant-based biofuel, similar to ethanol, making it a cleaner and greener fuel source. The mandatory blending of isobutanol with diesel is expected to be announced later this year, and we expect the rollout process to begin from 2027.

If approved, up to 15% isobutanol will be blended with diesel and supplied as a transportation fuel. Like petrol, diesel is one of the most widely used transportation fuels in India, particularly by commercial vehicles and heavy machinery.

The use of blended diesel could also have a significant impact on India's crude oil imports, as diesel consumption is substantially higher than petrol in several transport and industrial sectors. This would strengthen the country's energy security while also contributing to lower emissions and a cleaner mobility ecosystem.
