Indian Railways Achieves Record-Breaking Passenger Numbers On November 4

Following the Diwali holiday, Indian Railways witnessed a record-breaking day with over 30 million passengers travelling on November 4th. This marked the highest number of passengers handled in a single day by the railway administration.

Diwali celebrations took place on October 31st, accompanied by a three-day holiday. Many individuals booked their return tickets for November 3rd and 4th, leading to significant traffic congestion in cities like Chennai. This surge in travel is typical during festive seasons when people visit their hometowns and return to urban areas for work.

Record Passenger Numbers for Indian Railways

The railway administration has shared detailed statistics about this period. From October 1st to November 5th, approximately 75 million passengers travelled via trains. During this time, 7600 special trains were operated, accommodating 6.5 million passengers.

In comparison, only 4500 special trains were run during the same festive season in 2023. This represents a 73% increase in the number of special trains. The railway administration also confirmed that on November 4th, both suburban and non-suburban trains carried a total of 30 million passengers.

During this period, non-suburban trains transported around 120 million passengers. Of these, 1.943 million had booked tickets, while 101 million travelled without prior booking. In suburban trains, which do not offer booking facilities, all tickets were sold as non-booked tickets, with a total of 180 million passengers.
