Indian Railways: 160 Years And On
Indian Railways, one of the world's largest railway networks, came to life 160 years ago when the first passenger train ran between Bombay and Thane in 1853. To commemorate the occasion Indian Railways has released ads and so has Google.
Google regularly releases doodles marking important dates in history. The latest doodle, marking the 160th anniversary of Indian Railways is currently up on Google India homepage.

India's first passenger train service was started on April 16, 1853.

The train pulled out from Bori Bunder in Bombay and reached its destination, Thane, 34 kilometres away.

The carriages were pulled by three steam locomotives, Sultan, Sindh and Sahib.

The first passenger run transported 400 passengers, all of whom were invites. The train consisted of 14 carriages and the journey lasted 57 minutes.

The first ever railway track in India, however, was laid even earlier in 1832, near Chintadripet Bridge in Tamil Nadu.
