India's UDAN Scheme Offers Air Travel Fares As Low As Rs 150
Flying in India has just gotten more affordable, with fares dropping to as low as Rs 150 for certain routes under the regional air connectivity scheme, UDAN (Ude Desh ka Aam Nagrik). The scheme, which was initiated by the Ministry of Civil Aviation on October 21, 2016, aims to make flying accessible to more people by subsidizing costs on underserved routes.
The most pocket-friendly fare found is between Lilabari and Tezpur in Assam, for just Rs 150, offered by Alliance Air. This initiative allows travelers to embark on a 50-minute journey across Assam without burning a hole in their pockets, embodying the scheme's mission to enhance regional connectivity.

An analysis by a travel portal reveals that there are 22 routes where the base fare does not exceed Rs 1,000. These routes mainly cover the North East, along with other sectors like Bengaluru-Salem and Cochin-Salem, offering travelers an affordable way to fly.
These affordable base fares have made air travel more accessible and convenient for individuals looking to explore various destinations within India. They have also played a significant role in boosting tourism and promoting economic growth in different regions by facilitating easier transportation for travelers.

By offering competitive base fares for popular routes, airlines have been able to attract more passengers and contribute to the overall growth of the aviation industry. This strategy not only benefits travelers in terms of affordability but also helps in connecting different parts of the country efficiently, fostering better connectivity and convenience for all.
Thanks to the UDAN scheme, as reported by the Airports Authority of India (AAI) on March 31, 2024, 559 routes have been made operational. This has not only boosted air travel in previously underserved areas but also offered a slew of benefits such as waived landing and parking fees for airlines. This initiative marks a significant step towards making air travel more inclusive and accessible across India, promoting regional connectivity and economic development.
