No More Cash At Toll Plazas From April 10 – FASTag & UPI Now Mandatory

NHAI will end cash payments at toll plazas across India from April 10, 2026. Instead, travellers will be required to use UPI or FASTag for toll payments. These new regulations are also expected to encourage more users to opt for the annual pass.

Indian Toll Plazas to Go Fully Cashless from April 10

Highway travel is set to become faster and more digital as the government mandates UPI and FASTag as the only modes of payment at toll plazas. All national toll booths across India will shift to fully digital transactions, eliminating cash payments entirely. Cashless transactions will now be mandatory for all travellers, helping reduce waiting times and making toll crossings quicker by eliminating delays caused by cash exchanges.

At the same time, UPI payments may attract an additional charge of up to 25% for transactions. This move is aimed at promoting FASTag usage and encouraging users to adopt the annual pass system.

Additionally, only designated government vehicles will be allowed to pass through toll plazas without payment which includes Ambulances, Fire Brigade, Police, and designated high-ranking official vehicles. Individuals carrying government IDs in private vehicles will not be exempt from toll charges.

Recently, the government increased the FASTag annual pass fee from ₹3,000 to ₹3,075. This pass allows users to cross toll plazas up to 200 times per year, effectively reducing the cost to around ₹15 per pass, making it highly beneficial for frequent travellers.

These measures are expected to significantly reduce long queues at toll plazas, especially during weekends and festive seasons. Traffic congestion and extended waiting times have long been a major concern for commuters, and this shift aims to address those issues.

The annual pass can be recharged via the Rajmarg Yatra app or through the official websites of NHAI and MoRTH. Users need to enter their vehicle registration number and FASTag provider details. After completing the payment of ₹3,075, an OTP confirmation will be generated.

Payments can be made using debit cards, credit cards, UPI, or net banking. Once processed, the FASTag will be activated within 24 hours, allowing users to seamlessly cross up to 200 tolls per year.
