India To Launch First Satellite With Electric Propulsion Technology
India will launch the GSAT-9 Electric Propulsion satellite and here are some interesting facts about the new communication satellite.
India will launch the GSAT-9 satellite, or the South Asia Satellite, today and what makes the GSAT-9 interesting is the 'Electric Propulsion' system. The satellite is a high-priority factor for India alongside the economic and developmental priorities.
The Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi said, "The capacities of this satellite and the facilities it provides will go a long way in addressing South Asia's economic and developmental priorities."
The GSAT-9 is a multi-band communication and observation satellite and will be launched using Indian Space Research Organisation's (ISRO) heavy rocket Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV-F09).
The Electric propulsion system is the first of any Indian spacecraft. The Electric Propulsion (EP) system makes use of electrical power to accelerate the propellant by different possible electrical and magnetic means.
The GSAT-9 will make advanced Indian spacecraft lighter and lower the cost of launches in the future. All South Asian countries, excluding Pakistan, are part of this project.
