GNSS-Based Toll Management Set To Increase NHAI Earnings Significantly

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is set to replace the FASTag-based toll collection system with a GPS-based system, which will not require vehicles to stop at toll plazas for payment.

Union Minister Nitin Gadkari stated that the new Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS)-based toll management will increase NHAI's earnings by at least ₹10,000 crore. The system is expected to be implemented by the end of this year, as NHAI finalises a suitable tender.

GPS-Based Toll Collection: A Smoother Process

The upcoming GPS-based system aims to improve traffic flow at toll plazas and eliminate physical toll booths on national highways. This will allow vehicles to pass through these sections without any barriers.

NHAI has invited tenders from global companies capable of enabling GNSS-based toll management systems, with the goal of covering 50,000 km of India's national highway network within two years.

Hybrid Model with Existing FASTag Ecosystem

Initially, the GNSS-based system will work alongside the existing FASTag ecosystem using a hybrid model. This means that both Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) and GNSS technologies will be employed.

Virtual toll booths will be used to track vehicles entering and exiting tolled sections of highways, and dedicated lanes for GNSS-based toll collections will be established.

The new system in India uses GNSS technology to automatically collect toll fees from vehicles as they pass through virtual toll booths. This innovation is designed to offer a more transparent, efficient, and secure method of toll collection.

By using GNSS technology, the system can accurately track vehicles and calculate toll fees based on the distance traveled. This eliminates the need for physical toll booths, reducing traffic congestion and allowing for smoother traffic flow.

Additionally, the automated system reduces the chances of human error and corruption in toll collection, providing a more reliable and secure method for both the government and the drivers.

In conclusion, the implementation of a GPS-based toll collection system on Indian national highways promises to enhance traffic flow and increase NHAI's earnings significantly.

By working in tandem with the existing FASTag ecosystem, this new technology aims to create a more efficient and user-friendly experience for motorists across the country.
