India-Sri Lanka Ferry Service To Commence On 16th August: Ticket Prices Start At Rs 5,000

A passenger ferry service between Kankesanthurai in Sri Lanka and Nagapattinam in India is set to begin on 16th August. This service has been announced and cancelled multiple times previously. However, this time, the service is confirmed to resume.

The decision to operate a ferry from Nagapattinam in Tamil Nadu to Kankesanthurai in Sri Lanka was made recently. Both nations signed an agreement last year to initiate this service. It was initially announced on 14th October last year but did not commence as planned.

India-Sri Lanka Ferry Starts Aug 16

The Sivagangai ferry, chosen for this service, offers 133 economy class seats priced at Rs. 5000 each. Additionally, there are 27 business class seats available at Rs. 7500 per person. The ferry also features a fast-food restaurant where passengers can purchase meals separately.

Passengers are allowed to carry up to 60 kg of luggage, including 5 kg of hand-carry baggage. This makes it convenient for travellers with substantial luggage needs.

Bookings for the ferry service are now open and can be made online. Indian travellers using this service only need a passport and do not require a visa. Those entering Sri Lanka via this ferry will receive visa-free entry into the country.

A test run of the ferry service has already been successful, ensuring that all systems are operational and ready for the scheduled start date.

Cost Comparison with Flights

Travelling by ferry is considered a more affordable option compared to flights. A flight from Chennai to Jaffna costs at least Rs. 8000, whereas the ferry service costs only Rs. 5000, making it a cheaper alternative for travellers heading to Sri Lanka.

This initiative aims to strengthen the relationship between India and Sri Lanka by providing a low-cost transport option. Despite facing numerous challenges and delays, the service is now set to commence, potentially bringing significant changes in travel between the two countries.

DriveSpark Thinks

While India and Sri Lanka may appear close on a mao, they are separated by a considerable distance. A cost-effective transport service like this ferry is essential to bridge this gap. This ferry service is expected to play a crucial role in achieving this goal.
