India’s First Water Metro Service Starts Today In This City – Here’s Everything You Need To Know
India's first "Water Metro" service is all geared up to commence its operations from today onwards in Kochi, Kerala and this project will be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Speaking about the country's first water metro services in Kochi, the project has been funded by the Government of Kerala and the KfW (a German state-owned investment and development bank).
Apart from that, the Kochi water metro service will connect 10 different islands around the city. Additionally, the project also includes 38 terminals and 78 electric boats to ensure seamless connectivity across these islands and Kochi city.
One of the highlighting features of the water metro is its floating pontoons that have been designed to stay at the same level as the boat to ensure easier ingress and egress to its users.
That being said, the Kochi water metro has been built at a cost of Rs 1,136.83 crore, and as part of phase 1 of the project, the water metro services will commence from the High Court-Vypin terminals to the Vytilla-Kakkanad terminals.
Though such a massive project, tickets have been priced from Rs 20 to ensure it is affordable to all segments of people. Apart from that, passengers can also use the "Kochi 1" card of the city's metro network as well as book tickets online.
Other than that, passengers of the Kochi water metro can also avail monthly and weekly passes. It has also been said that all Kochi water metro will be facilitated with automated fare collection.
