No Toll Gates, No Queues: India’s New Highway MLFF Toll System Explained
Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has introduced a new Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) tolling system in India that eliminates the need for vehicles to stop at toll plazas. The new barrierless toll collection technology is designed to offer a faster and more seamless travel experience while significantly reducing congestion on national highways.
The system was inaugurated in Delhi by Nitin Gadkari at the Mundka-Bakkarwala toll plaza. This pilot project combines two advanced technologies: Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) and FASTag.

Traditional toll plazas often require vehicles to stop and wait in long queues, especially during peak hours, leading to delays, fuel wastage and driver frustration. In contrast, the MLFF system removes physical barriers entirely. Vehicles can continue driving through dedicated lanes at normal speeds while cameras and sensors mounted above the roadway automatically identify and process toll payments.
How MLFF Toll System Works?
- The ANPR cameras capture the vehicle's registration number and match it with the linked FASTag account.
- Once the vehicle is identified, the toll amount is deducted automatically without requiring any action from the driver.
- If the toll payment fails due to insufficient balance or any other issue, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) will issue an electronic notice to the registered owner.
- The outstanding toll amount must be paid within 72 hours to avoid further penalties. Failure to do so may result in a penalty of up to twice the original toll amount, and additional restrictions may be imposed until the dues are cleared.
Advantages of MLFF Tolling System

The biggest advantage of the MLFF tolling system is its ability to reduce congestion and save time. Since vehicles no longer need to stop, travel becomes smoother and more efficient. The system also helps reduce fuel consumption and emissions by minimizing unnecessary idling and repeated acceleration.
If implemented across the country, the Multi-Lane Free Flow tolling system could transform highway travel in India, making long-distance journeys faster, cleaner and more convenient for millions of motorists.
