India Gets Its First Electric Double Decker Bus – BEST To Commence Operations Soon
Electric vehicle manufacturer Switch Mobility has finally delivered the first batch of its Switch EiV22 electric double-decker buses to Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST).
Diving into details, Mumbai's BEST revived its legacy of double-decker city buses with the new Switch EiV22, and we expect BEST to commence operations of these 200 units of electric double-decker buses very soon in Mumbai.

Speaking about Switch EiV22, the EV maker claims it to be the first electric double-decker, air-conditioned bus that is designed, developed, and manufactured in India. Furthermore, Switch Mobility recently showcased the EiV22 electric double-decker busses at the Auto Expo 2023 and received an overwhelming response from the public at the event.
In terms of specifications, the new Switch EiV22 electric double-decker bus comes equipped with a huge 231kWh 2-string, liquid-cooled, high-density NMC chemistry battery pack. Thanks to this large battery pack, Switch Mobility claims that the new EiV22 electric double-decker bus can travel up to 250 kilometres on a fully charged battery pack.
That being said, having to pack an enormous battery pack has a few disadvantages and one of which is the charging time. As such, Switch Mobility has equipped the EiV22 electric double-decker bus with a dual gun charging system to overcome this issue. With this system, the Switch EiV22 electric double-decker bus can be charged to its full capacity in just 80 minutes.
It is also worth mentioning that the Switch EiV22 electric double-decker bus uses lightweight aluminium body construction. As a result, the Switch EiV22 is just 18 per cent heavier than a comparable single-decker electric bus claims the EV maker. Moreover, the Switch EiV22 electric double-decker bus comes with two staircases to access the upper deck as well.
In terms of safety, the Switch EiV22 electric double-decker bus monitors battery temperature remotely to inform the driver of any dangers and comes with its own fire suppression system. Furthermore, it also comes with an emergency door that complies with all the latest safety standards.
Thoughts About The Switch EiV22 (India's First Electric Double-Decker Bus)
While electric buses have become common in many metro cities in India, electric double-decker buses are yet to be introduced in India despite a lot of excitement from the public. That being said, the success of the electric double-decker bus service in Mumbai will determine the implementation in other Indian states.
