India's First In-Plant Railway Siding Launched At Maruti Suzuki For Enhanced Logistics
Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently launched India's first-ever in-plant railway siding for automobiles at Maruti Suzuki's facility in Gujarat. This inauguration, conducted via a virtual conference, marks a significant step under the Gati Shakti programme. The initiative aims to improve logistics, reduce carbon emissions, and alleviate road congestion by utilizing railway transport. This move towards railway transport is expected to lower fossil fuel consumption and ease traffic on roads.
A Leap in Sustainable Automotive Logistics
Once it is fully operational, the railway siding in Gujarat will have the capacity to dispatch 300,000 cars annually to 15 different locations across India. This initiative is not just about scaling logistics but also about considerable environmental benefits.
It is projected to reduce carbon emissions by up to 1,650 metric tons annually. Moreover, the fact that the railway siding will operate entirely on electric power amplifies its environmental benefits.
Another significant advantage of this railway siding is the reduction of truck trips required to transport cars. With this facility, up to 50,000 truck trips could be eliminated each year. This equates to saving 35 million units of fossil fuels annually. Moreover, the network will connect the Maruti Suzuki India Limited (MSIL) plant to approximately 300 cities across India, streamlining the distribution process.
Impact on Maruti Suzuki's Growth Plans
Hisashi Takeuchi, Managing Director & CEO of MSIL, emphasized the critical role of the new in-plant railway facility in the company's growth strategy. Maruti Suzuki aims to double its production capacity from 2 million units annually to 4 million units by the fiscal year 2030-31. This railway siding is a stepping stone in achieving that target by ensuring efficient and sustainable logistics.
