Government To Set Up E100 Ethanol Fuel Stations Across India To Boost Flex-Fuel Adoption

The Government of India is set to open around 100 ethanol dispensing fuel stations across the country this year to support the growing adoption of flex-fuel vehicles. The move is part of the government's broader strategy to reduce fuel imports and strengthen India's ethanol fuel ecosystem.

Government to Setup E100 Ethanol Fuel Stations

Union Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Hardeep Singh Puri, has stated that the government is planning to establish 50 to 100 ethanol dispensing stations across several key cities in India amid the growing adoption of flex-fuel technologies.

Ethanol Fuel Stations

As one of the world's largest importers of crude oil, India remains vulnerable to global supply disruptions and geopolitical uncertainties. A significant portion of the country's fuel imports passes through the Strait of Hormuz, and the recent blockage has made India's energy security a key concern for policymakers.

Flex Fuel Adoption Is One Way

The Indian government is actively working to reduce its dependence on imported fossil fuels, and higher ethanol blending has emerged as one of the key strategies to achieve this objective. Increased ethanol blending will also encourage greater adoption of flex-fuel vehicles capable of running on higher ethanol concentrations.

To support this ecosystem, the government plans to open new Ethanol (E100) dispensing outlets across major cities such as Pune, Nagpur, Mumbai, and Delhi-NCR. These stations will help strengthen ethanol availability and support the supply of higher ethanol-blended fuels in the coming months.

Ethanol Fuel Stations

Initially, the government aims to establish around 500 ethanol dispensing outlets by 2026. This number is expected to increase significantly to nearly 5,000 stations across the country by 2027. Notably, two of India's leading automotive manufacturers, Hero MotoCorp and Maruti Suzuki, have already unveiled E85-capable vehicles this week, signalling the industry's readiness for higher ethanol adoption.

To further accelerate adoption, the government is also considering consumer-friendly policies for flex-fuel vehicles, including attractive pricing benefits, road tax incentives, and awareness campaigns aimed at encouraging buyers to switch to cleaner fuel alternatives.

The government believes that flex fuels can play a major role in reducing fuel imports, lowering dependence on foreign crude oil, and saving valuable foreign exchange reserves. It has also encouraged automotive manufacturers to accelerate the development of flex-fuel technologies, which are increasingly being viewed as a key part of India's future mobility strategy.

In the coming years, fuel stations across the country could offer multiple ethanol-blended fuel options such as E20, E25, and E85, depending on the compatibility of individual vehicles. Higher ethanol-blended fuels could potentially be priced lower than conventional petrol blends, creating an additional incentive for consumers to adopt flex-fuel vehicles.
