India's Electric Mobility Push: Support For 3.72 Lakh EVs Under New Scheme

Up to 3.72 lakh electric vehicles will receive support under the Electric Mobility Promotion Scheme (EMPS) being implemented from April to July, with a budget of Rs 493.55 crore, the government announced on Tuesday.

The scheme aims to boost green mobility and enhance the electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing ecosystem in India. According to the Ministry of Heavy Industries, the scheme will support a maximum of 3,72,215 electric vehicles.

Electric Vehicle Support Breakdown

This includes 3,33,387 electric two-wheelers, 13,590 e-rickshaws or e-carts, and 25,238 electric three-wheelers in the L5 category. The figures were shared by the Ministry of Heavy Industries.

"EMPS 2024 is fund limited, with restricted number of vehicles and a term-limited Scheme," stated the ministry. "The subsidies for demand incentive are eligible for e-2w and e-3w sold and registered until the funds are available or the number of vehicles supported reaches the maximum number defined category-wise or until July 31, 2024, whichever comes first."

The scheme's primary goal is to promote green mobility and develop India's EV manufacturing sector. It provides financial incentives for purchasing electric two-wheelers and three-wheelers.

Scheme Duration and Limitations

The EMPS 2024 is designed as a time-bound initiative. It will run until either the allocated funds are exhausted or the maximum vehicle limit is reached by July 31, 2024. This initiative is expected to significantly contribute to reducing carbon emissions and promoting sustainable transportation solutions across India.

The government hopes that this scheme will encourage more people to switch to electric vehicles, thereby reducing dependence on fossil fuels and cutting down on pollution levels. By supporting a large number of electric vehicles within a short period, EMPS 2024 aims to create a substantial impact on India's transportation landscape.

The focus remains on ensuring that these incentives reach as many eligible buyers as possible within the stipulated timeframe. This move aligns with India's broader goals of achieving significant reductions in greenhouse gas emissions and fostering an eco-friendly transportation network.
