India Prepares For Launch Of Its First 'Hydrogen Train': Trial Runs To Commence Soon
India is on the brink of introducing its first hydrogen-powered train, which is currently in the final stages of preparation. Although it appears unfinished, only minor tasks like painting, connecting hydrogen cylinders, and some technical work remain. These are anticipated to be completed soon, paving the way for trial runs in the country.
The Integral Coach Factory in Perambur, Chennai, is responsible for building this innovative train. A recent image of the fully assembled train has been released. Reports indicate that the train will be ready for test runs by the end of this month. The trials are set to occur on the Jind-Sonipat route in Haryana.

This hydrogen train has already been tested at speeds of 89 km/h and is capable of reaching 110 km/h. It features a 1,200 hp motor, showcasing its robust engineering. Unlike other countries where hydrogen trains operate with five coaches, India's version will have ten coaches, promising a premium travel experience.
The Indian government plans to deploy this eco-friendly train in hilly regions, considering environmental benefits. The Southern Railways will be the first to utilise this hydrogen-powered marvel. The Ministry of Railways aims to produce 35 such trains nationwide with a budget of approximately Rs. 2,300 crore.
Manufacturing of additional units will commence once the current test model passes crucial evaluations. These efforts are expected to start in April. The Vande Bharat train has already captured the hearts of Indian travellers, and similar enthusiasm is anticipated for this new hydrogen train.
There is significant anticipation for hydrogen trains in India. It is hoped that these trains will eventually operate not only on mountain routes but also on regular tracks, offering a more premium experience than the Vande Bharat train.
Hydrogen-powered trains are already operational in several countries worldwide. In India, they are being developed to meet global standards at an estimated cost of Rs. 80 crore per train. This initiative reflects India's commitment to sustainable and advanced rail transport solutions.
