First Vande Bharat Sleeper Route Revealed - Launch Timeline, Fares & Expected Timings
Indian Railways is set to roll out India’s first Vande Bharat Sleeper between Guwahati’s Kamakhya station and Howrah this month, promising a three‑plus hour cut in journey time and a Rajdhani‑like overnight experience with fixed fares. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to flag off the inaugural run in the second half of January 2026, subject to final scheduling clearance.
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has confirmed that the Howrah–Guwahati Vande Bharat Sleeper will be the first operational sleeper variant of the semi‑high‑speed brand, earlier limited to daytime chair‑car services. The minister said the train will be launched within 17–18 days, aligning the debut with broader railway modernisation moves planned through 2026.
Guwahati–Howrah Vande Bharat Sleeper Route, Halts & Coach Mix
The service will technically run between Kamakhya, serving Guwahati, and Howrah, with primary maintenance based at Howrah. It will operate six days a week using two 16‑coach trainsets built by BEML with Integral Coach Factory technology, featuring 11 AC three‑tier coaches, four AC two‑tier coaches and one AC First Class coach, offering 823 berths in all.
On the Howrah–Guwahati sector, the Vande Bharat Sleeper is planned to run via Bandel, halting at key junctions including Katwa, New Farakka, Malda Town, New Jalpaiguri, New Coochbehar and New Bongaigaon, before Kamakhya. These stops are expected to give semi‑high‑speed overnight connectivity to large swathes of south Bengal, north Bengal and western Assam, while still keeping the overall halt count limited.

Expected Vande Bharat Sleeper Fares & On‑Board Experience
The Howrah–Guwahati Vande Bharat Sleeper will offer three classes: AC 3‑tier, AC 2‑tier and AC First Class. For end‑to‑end travel, fares have been pegged at ₹2,300 for 3AC, ₹3,000 for 2AC and ₹3,600 for AC First. Vaishnaw has underlined that “there will be no dynamic fare,” with catering charges bundled into the ticket price for all classes.
| Class | One‑way fare (Howrah–Guwahati) |
|---|---|
| AC 3‑tier | ₹2,300 |
| AC 2‑tier | ₹3,000 |
| AC First Class | ₹3,600 |
Food will be used to underline the route’s regional identity. Passengers boarding from Guwahati will be served Assamese cuisine on the Guwahati–Howrah leg, while those travelling from Howrah will get Bengali dishes on the return. The all‑AC rake also features ergonomic berths, redesigned ladders, quieter interiors and bio‑vacuum toilets, aiming for a near‑airline overnight experience.
Under the skin, the Vande Bharat Sleeper inherits the propulsion and safety template of its daytime cousin, with distributed power coaches enabling quick acceleration and braking, and a design speed tested up to 180 kmph on trial sections. The train is equipped with the indigenously developed KAVACH anti‑collision system and advanced fire detection, while engineers claim ride comfort comparable to leading international overnight trains.

Vande Bharat Sleeper - Timings, Time Savings & Booking Watchlist
Indian Railways has not yet notified a detailed timetable, though officials have indicated an evening departure with morning arrival at the other end to suit office and business travellers. With a scheduled journey time of around 14 hours 30 minutes, the Vande Bharat Sleeper is projected to cut more than three hours against the Saraighat Express, currently taking about 17½ hours between Howrah and Guwahati.
Bookings are expected to open once the Railway Board clears the inaugural date and assigns train numbers, likely keeping the usual 120‑day advance reservation window. Given the combination of fixed fares, bundled food and a large 3AC share, early runs are likely to see heavy waitlists, especially ex‑Howrah on Fridays and ex‑Kamakhya before major festivals, making alert monitoring of IRCTC and Tatkal quotas crucial for regular travellers.
The Howrah–Guwahati Vande Bharat Sleeper marks a decisive shift in how Indian Railways approaches long overnight corridors, combining Rajdhani‑style comfort with faster turnarounds and predictable pricing. For Assam, north Bengal and Kolkata, the launch signals tighter overnight business links and a template that could soon extend to other 1,200–1,500 km routes as more sleeper trainsets join the fleet through 2026.
