Honda's 209kmph Mean Mower Gets Tested
Top Gear UK is known for doing things the non traditional way and by non traditional we mean going lunatic. Hence when their minds set on a decent Honda lawn mower one day they decided on turning it into a hooligan. They approached Honda first with their request who then rightly directed them to Honda's Touring Car Championship partners.
Cutting short the story, a fitting lawn mower was finally developed and after appropriate testing it was billed as the world's fastest lawn mower. Heck, it is so fast that it can even outpace some Ferraris and Porsche sports cars. If you are interested in knowing more about the newly crowned king of lawn mowers head over to the gallery below.
It's called the Honda Mean Mower and it was originally a standard Honda HF2620 lawn mower.
But once Team Dynamics, Honda's British Touring Car Championship partners, were through with it all that is left of the original machine are the plastic body panels and a couple of pedals.
The motor now sitting underneath comes from a Honda VTR Firestorm sports bike.
The 1000cc bike engine delivers 109 HP and 96 Nm of torque. Power to weight ratio is 520 HP per ton. The engine is mated to a 6 speed paddle shift gearbox.
Here is Mean Mower's claim to fame. It can reach 96 kmph (60 mph) in an incredible 4 seconds flat and tops out an even more incredible number of 209 km/h!!
Mean Mower is still noisy though and registers an ear popping 130dB on the decibel meter.
In the end, Mean Mower is nothing but an ATV on steroids with grass cutters underneath it. After all the suspensions and wheels are from an ATV.
Among other things, the steering rack comes from a Morris Minor aka the Indian HM Ambassador.
And yes, it still has blades. Not the regular ones, but new ones driven by two electric motors which spin at 4000 rpm. It can cut grass even at speeds of 24 km/h, which is about twice the speed of its regular self. But the grass bag now holds fuel instead of the green stuff. Mowing the lawn will never be the same with Mean Mower in your house.
