Hamster Drives A Volvo Truck Up A Quarry
Volvo, the Swedish automaker, comes up with the most interesting and ingenious ways to advertise the features of its vehicles. The automaker realises the power of YouTube. You know you have a hit when a video propagates itself across the interweb, or in other words, goes viral.
Volvo seems to have mastered this trick. This is evident from a few YouTube promotional videos the company has released. These ads advertise a single special feature such as the stability or strength of a Volvo truck. But this is demonstrated in the most unconventional method. For instance, getting a 175 grams hamster to steer a 15 tonne truck. You can watch the video, along with couple of earlier ones.
This stunt was carried out in a closed-off quarry at Los Tres Cunados, Spain. We have Charlie, a talented hamster scampering inside the ‘steering cage' and precision driver Seon Rogers, controlling the hamster with a carrot and his feet on the pedal.
"It was a big challenge. The driver had to hold the carrot in just the right way so he could lead the hamster. If he held it too high or too low Charlie would lose interest," explains animal trainer Grace Dickinson. Several hamsters were auditioned before Charlie, the hamster with the right attitude was selected.
Claes Nilsson, president Volvo Trucks, puts his life in the hands of...err..puts his life on a hook. Demonstrates the strength of Volvo FMX truck.
Precision handling of a Volvo truck is demonstrated with champion rope walker Faith Dickey, walking from one truck to another before the road ends.
