Guinness Takes Away Bugatti Veyron Top Speed Title
Hennessey Venom GT recently, reportedly broke the Bugatti Veyron Super Sport's production car top speed record of 267.8 mph. However, this was not recognized by Guinness World Records because the Venom GT did a single run instead of the required two runs, the average of which is taken. If no other car beat the Bugatti Veyron SS then why did it lose its title?
It turns out Hennessey cried aloud stating that that the top speed achieved by the Veyron SS during the record run cannot be acheived by production models that are sold to customers since they have electronic speed limiters set to 258 mph. Since the record is for the ‘fastest production car' the Veryon SS cannot technically lay claim to it.
In an official statement Guinness World Records stated, "It has come to the attention of Guinness World Records that there was an oversight in its adjudication of the ‘Fastest production car' which was set in 2010 by the Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Super Sport."
"As the car's speed limiter was deactivated, this modification was against the official guidelines. Consequently, the vehicle's record set at 431.072 km/h is no longer valid. Following this, Guinness World Records is reviewing this category with expert external consultants to ensure our records fairly reflect achievements in this field."
Bugatti Veyron Super Sport had acheived the Guinness World Record in 2010
Since the Venom GT has not been granted the top speed record either, the title of the fastest production car automatically reverts back to the previous record holder Shelby SuperCars (SSC) Ultimate Aero.
The SSC Ultimate Aero's top speed record stands at 256.1 mph.
As far as Venom GT's claim for the title of the fastest production car goes it first has to achieve its 265.7 mph number in both directions.
Second, Hennessey must build a minimum of 50 production units of the Venom GT for it to qualify as a production car.
